When God Calls You to Write
by Julia Margaret
(Philippians 1:6, ESV).
One tear-filled evening after my divorce, God spoke to me about writing a book to encourage others in the midst of heartache. The thought of writing a book baffled me. I wasn’t a writer. I wasn’t even much of a reader. As God quieted my concerns, I submitted. Well, Lord, when you’re ready to give me the words, I’ll write it.
Eight years later, while driving to work, God gave me the words—so many words that I had to pull my car over to scribble notes. In a flash, He set my course in a different direction. The time had come to reflect on my painful past and use it for future good. God, I can’t wait to see what you will do with this!
By spring, I completed a rough draft of six chapters in my book. The more I poured myself into its pages and focused on helping others with my stories, the more God healed my grieving heart and restored happiness to my life.
Philippians 1:6 reminds us that God always brings to completion what he began. Sometimes his calling comes long before his timing. He may plant seeds in our hearts and then allow us to wait while he develops our character and deepens our faith. Then with a prepared heart, he equips us for the task ahead.
If God has placed a call on your life for you to write, don’t be discouraged if the path has silent seasons. Waiting is not wasted time. Often, it is where God does his greatest work. When his timing is right, he will open the door, provide you the words, and accomplish his purpose through your obedient and willing heart. When we listen to God, our narrative is faith-filled rather than forced. His timing is always perfect.
Dear God, thank you for beginning a good work in me. I look forward to the completed results as I listen for your voice and write your words. May everything I write bring you alone all the glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
