Press On, Writer
by Tina Yeager
“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus”
(Philippians 3:14, NIV).
I typed the final word onto the last page of my manuscript and flexed my fingers, tempted to raise my arms in celebration. But an unedited message remained incomplete. I resumed my efforts and launched into the next phase of the journey.
I combed through the lines to apply all my editor’s recommendations. When I rose from my desk to cheer, the reality hanging overhead tamped me back down. The daunting tasks of publication and marketing loomed ahead. My work remained unfinished.
I reflected on the decades of writing through which I had labored to reach this moment. Ahead of me, the destination continued to linger far out of view. Instead of rejoicing, a heavy sigh deflated my heart and exhausted my will to proceed.
Mental and emotional fatigue brought me to my knees. I stretched forth my empty hands in prayer.
The Lord met me there, defining my surrender as a position of strength. His presence immersed my soul in the balm of his love. The delight of his Spirit lifted my chin. Gentle whispers summoned thoughts of Christ’s mission. He stirred forth reminders of my calling, the purpose for which he sculpted my outstretched fingers. And he invited me to continue toward his goal.
Instead of demanding my obedience, he beckoned me to participate in his accomplishments. To join him in the continuation of his epic adventure.
The option to refuse him remained. The choice between defeat and perseverance lay before me. But how could I deny such a good Savior?
Despite the immeasurable distance, endless effort, and elusive finish line, I have accepted Christ’s invitation to persist in my creative calling. I will cheer for the true champion with guaranteed triumph, and it isn’t me. And I will begin each segment of this race at the optimal starting block—on my knees.
Jesus, thank you for calling me to join your cross-Kingdom adventure as a message bearer. I look forward to celebrating your certain victory even as we’re still running toward its fulfillment. I’m so grateful for your grace and your loving presence. Thank you for equipping me with your Holy Spirit as I submit to you in prayer. Amen.
