The Writer, the Princes, and the King

by Tina Yeager

“Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save … Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth”

(Psalm 146:3-6, NIV).

Spring catalyzes the entirety of creation to offer diverse praises to our creator. Azaleas explode with blooms. Buds shoot forth from branches overhead and spring from bulbs underfoot. Songbirds stream through the skies by day and owls raise their hoots to the stars by night. Like a pyrotechnic celebration of resurrection from winter, color and song burst into our world with fantastically paced timing. Our Creator designs each element of nature to render unique honor to his glory at a specific moment in the season.

God imparted stewardship over creation to mortals, a position sometimes held with unsanctioned arrogance. Opinionated people can criticize worshipers. Some denounce the pollinators for their messy process toward fruition. Others criticize the eagle for failing to mimic the robin’s voice. Or chide the citrus trees for blooming later than the dogwoods. Humans may attempt to evaluate the world, but God remains the ultimate engineer, honoree, and judge of creation’s worship performance.

As creatives, we often suffer from unsanctioned attacks of criticism. Sometimes slander and unfair comparisons come from those with a measure of authority. Those granted stewardship positions in publishing, social media platforms, or writing communities can tempt us to doubt the validity of our calling as writers. Many “princes” may scrutinize us, but there is only one King. And no matter how accomplished a “prince” of this world might become, in publishing or otherwise, he cannot claim ultimate authority over our identity and purpose.

As creative participants in this magnificent ode to our Maker, we have a vital role to fulfill in a world engineered to testify to his glory.  The Lord called each writer to honor him with a unique work of praise. Our words hold powerful blessings of a specific cadence, color, and scope. The Creator engineers them to burst forth at their specified moment in a certain season to sparkle for his glory and purpose.

May our work spring heavenward in worship, transcending opinions murmured on earthly thrones, to glorify the Maker of all.

Lord, thank you for Jesus Christ, whose sacrifice grants us triumph over all accusing tongues meant to destroy our destinies. When we need help overcoming criticism, you are faithful. Help us to write as an act of worship for you alone. Amen.
