Press On

by Tina Yeager

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus”

(Philippians 3:13-14, NIV).

On trips with my kids that lasted longer than an hour, a four-word question often haunted me without mercy.

“Are we there yet?”

Even if I answered them, their young minds couldn’t quite grasp the concepts of remaining time and distance. Sometimes they’d moan that we had been driving forever.  Then my sons repeated the same inquiry every few minutes. I could either succumb to exasperation or redirect their focus. Sometimes we discussed how we might enjoy what awaited us at the destination.

I had no right to criticize their impatience. Countless times on my writing journey, I’ve badgered my heavenly Father with similar complaints.

“This is taking forever. Are we almost there?”

While bemoaning the setbacks and delays, sometimes I’ve even questioned where he’s actually taking me.

Thankfully, the Lord demonstrates infinite patience with me. The Creator of my mind knows its limited capacity. I wouldn’t understand his perspective on the scope of this route or its fulfillment. So, he doesn’t react to me with exasperation. Instead, he calls me to press on with him. He reminds me not to focus on the weary miles behind us, but to trust him by persevering toward his goal.

I certainly have not “yet taken hold” of success in this calling as a writer. But I believe the one who calls me has a worthwhile destination in mind. And as I faithfully pursue a goal that I cannot conceive, he sustains my frail heart with the joy of his presence. Our time driving together then becomes a cabin space of heaven on earth.

Lord, thank you for your presence. I’m so grateful for your mercy and patience with my questions. Please continue to steer and empower me to the fulfillment of your perfect will for my writing. Help me persevere and remain faithful to your calling on my life. I know I can trust you with time, distance, and destination. In Christ’s name, Amen.

I pray the prayer of St. Anselm of Canterbury: I have not yet done that for which I was made.
