Discomfort and Writer Growth

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me”

(Philippians 3:12, NIV).

Growth rarely feels graceful. It often arrives with uncertainty, a quickened pulse, and that question whispering, Am I really ready for this? For Christian authors, moments of discomfort may not signify we’ve missed God’s will. They often serve as evidence that we’re walking straight into it.

As writers, we spend a lot of time sharpening our craft, studying trends, and learning best practices. These things matter. But spiritual and creative growth often happens in less polished spaces. It happens when God nudges us beyond what feels safe and into places where we must rely on him.

Discomfort shows up when we say yes to something new: submitting to a publication that feels out of reach, teaching a workshop we feel unqualified to lead, or writing in a genre that stretches our voice. In those moments, we are forced to admit a humbling truth—we’re still learning. And that’s not a weakness. It’s an invitation.

Scripture reminds us God delights in growth that requires dependence. Paul didn’t claim mastery; he pressed forward. The same is true for us. God doesn’t ask us to arrive fully formed. He asks us to follow faithfully.

While education provides a foundation, growth comes when knowledge meets real life. We can study writing endlessly, but transformation happens when we act. When we submit, fail, revise, and try again, God often uses these messy moments to teach us what success alone never could.

As Christian writers, we grow when we acknowledge discomfort but embrace God’s grace and take steps of obedience. We can prayerfully seek guidance from God on what he might be teaching us. The Lord remains patient with us throughout the process, but he will call us to act before we feel ready. Obedience matters more than confidence. Since failure submitted into God’s hands isn’t final, we can learn from mistakes without shame.

Discomfort isn’t the enemy of growth. It’s often the doorway. So let’s remain mindful of our calling and invite God to strengthen us through  our struggles. Reliance on him will deepen our faith and align our work with his purpose.

Lord, thank you for calling us to create for your glory. When discomfort arises, help us to trust you more deeply. Give us the courage to step forward, the humility to keep learning, and the faith to believe that you are at work in every uncertain moment. Use our words, our growth, and even our struggles to reflect your truth. Amen.
