A New Year of Writing
by Tina Yeager
“See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland”
As I prepared to take down the Christmas decorations, stacks of storage bins flanked my entry into each dim closet. I brushed past the ossuaries in which my rejected manuscripts remained entombed. A twinge of regret stung my heart and drew a sigh. Publication attempts that sifted through my fingers like sands had often tempted me to declare myself lost in a writing wilderness. Though I considered burying my dreams in the wasteland more than once, the Lord never consented to abandoning his purpose in a grave.
At each setback, God prompts me onward. He does not call me to assess the landscape, predict my arrival at a destination, or even attempt to navigate my path forward. Declaring my writing journey’s state as dead has never been part of my assignment. After all, the origin and purpose of my calling is in the Resurrector of the dead. Elohim speaks all creation into existence from nothingness. And he has never abandoned me to perish, even when I fail to notice his blessings because I preoccupy myself with counting grains of sand.
Yahweh Nissi goes before me to the next blank page and beckons me to follow his way. Obedience brings a stream of his nourishment to my heart, mind, and soul. The Holy Spirit refreshes me with his encouragement and pours words through me. Each time I meet him here at this stark place, his presence reminds me that no space in which he joins me shall ever be empty.
As I put away the trimmings of the past season and nod to yesteryear’s reams of work, I choose to embark into the coming year with grateful faith. I trust the Word, the Waymaker, for his words and his way ahead in my writing life. And I look forward to seeing what will spring up.
Redeemer, thank you for guiding me through my desert seasons. Your presence serves as an ever-present oasis surrounding me. I seek to dwell in you in all my thoughts, words, and ways. Let me not return to grave digging mindsets. I’m so grateful that you continue to remind me of your faithfulness and that you will lead me to your perfect promises. I can always trust you, Jesus my Lord. Amen.
