Unite to Write
by Evelyn Jordon
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do”
(1 Thessalonians 5:11, KJV).
How many times have you prepared yourself to write, opened a blank document on your computer, then closed the screen without having typed anything?
When I sit down to write, I may have a million ideas running through my head, a ton of new characters I want to flesh out, or an interesting way to start a scene. But sometimes I stare at my empty Word document and all my creativity drifts away until I’m sitting alone at my desk with a powered-off screen.
Thankfully, I have a writing group that offers encouragement and advice. They help me problem-solve scenes or character development when I’m stuck.
In addition to serving my writing life, fellowship sustains my personal life as well. When trials appear, I may initially think I can face them on my own. While handling things on my own can seem like the easiest option at times, God has given me friends and family—people who care and are readily there to help. My loved ones offer support and comfort which eases the burden of facing hardships alone. I simply have to ask.
Many writers default to isolation. We might hole up in an office and simmer on ideas and empty pages for days. While that may work temporarily, a healthier solution is to seek help, advice, peer reviews, or even a hug from a friend. It’s far easier to sit and stare at an empty Word document than to ask for assistance. Resources for writers abound, but we must reach out to avail ourselves of them.
Lord, thank you for the people you have placed in my life for encouragement and support. Help me to provide the same for them when they are in need. Amen.
