A Writer’s Essential Training

by Tina Yeager

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come … That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe”

(1 Timothy 4:8-10, NIV).

My mind reeled with information from the four training events I had juggled this month. I studied coaching, media production, marketing, and writing, and all of them imposed additional objectives upon my existing workload. I collapsed at my breakfast table, daunted by the countless tasks mounting before me. Overwhelm threatened to paralyze me.

Late morning rays swept across the weathered dinette’s wooden surface and highlighted the open pages of my Bible. Scripture drew me to lay aside my study and all its directives and choose a fresh starting point for my work. Instead of focusing on the list of what I must do, I sought him with whom I must be.

Prayerful meditation on scripture and praise centers my soul in awareness of God’s presence. The Holy Spirit brings me wisdom to align me with his perfect will. He reveals truths no other training can provide. The Lord guides me out of overwhelm into his sufficiency so I can accept his promises and pursue my calling.

Professional training has value, but dwelling in Christ must serve as my primary source of personal development. The Lord equips my mind and soul to fulfill his mission well. He clarifies his purpose for me and reveals my ideal priorities for the day.

I no longer sag under the weight of educational burdens or sigh at the mountain of tasks ahead. I now submit myself to the burden bearer and mountain mover. With Christ at my side, I embrace the adventure he has planned for each day.

Father, thank you for the precious gifts of Jesus and your Holy Spirit. I’m so blessed and grateful for your presence to support me every day. Please continue to keep me centered on you in all my being and doing. Help me dwell forever in you and you in me. Amen.
