Resurrector of an Author’s Hope

by Tina Yeager

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions… And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace… For it is by grace you have been saved… not by works, so that no one can boast”

(Ephesians 2:4-9, NIV).

A sour eddy eroded the floor of my stomach as I stared at the title of my dead book. Years of effort, outreach, and hope now decayed in the publishing realm’s grave. This reality thudded against my dreams like clods of earth threatening to bury my calling along with the project.

Did this certify the death of my future as an author? Was I beyond hope of serving Christ with my words?

While I grieved, the Holy Spirit reminded me of Christ’s identity as resurrector. Of Elohim’s power to breathe a universe from hopeless chaos. That “he is not the God of the dead but of the living” (Matthew 22:32, NIV). The Lord assured me that he can overcome all death, whether of dreams or flesh.

My success as an author doesn’t determine my status as a follower of Jesus. As long he remains my Lord, I live to serve him. Disappointing results do not nullify his commission. Christ didn’t shape and send me as a conditional bearer of his truth. He didn’t appoint me to write only if my work yields specific results.

Even if my projects languish on earth, El Roi sees life in the words he breathes through me. I do not need to grieve any career losses from my desk chair. For my spirit and the creative anointing bestowed upon it enjoy another position. The Lord has raised me and the words I bear to an eternal seat beside Christ’s throne.

No matter how hopeless my projects may seem here and now, I can rejoice. Not a single word from or service unto Jesus can perish. As long as I serve Christ, even the gravest circumstances cannot threaten my life or its purpose.

Jesus, thank you for resurrecting my hope. Please continue to guide me to serve you with my words, whatever the circumstances. Help me focus on your heavenly reality and fulfill the calling you placed on my life. Amen.
