Our Home in the Writing Wilderness
by Tina Yeager
(Psalm 90:1-2,12, NIV).
Desert rays swathed my body and leeched the moisture from its cells. My hike across the Arizona dust slowed to a stagger. I shifted my gaze between the dizzying path at my feet and the goal ahead. Just a bit further. This momentary struggle would not endure forever. I pressed on to summit a rocky mound.
Before me stretched a magnificent view, unlike anything I had ever experienced. Photos, videos, or accounts from other visitors could not convey the exhilaration of witnessing this extraordinary vista firsthand. Sun-gilded, majestic cliffs proclaimed the Creator’s glory and inspired my soul.
Heat and thirst threatened to overtake me, but my confidence remained secure. I had not undertaken this journey without considering how to thrive and remain within access to safe refuge. Our nearby vehicle awaited with electrolytes, water, and cool air to rejuvenate me. With calculated steps, I could revel in this time with God instead of missing out on its fulfillment.
Our writing journey involves struggle through intense stretches of wilderness. The arid circumstances of rejection and unsuccessful projects drain our spirits. If we stare only at our feet, despair can overtake us. But if we lift our gaze to focus on the goal, the Lord will remind us we do not journey without him. He offers us refuge and renewal in the desert places. The Holy Spirit helps us value the steps toward the summit and multiply our blessings along the way.
When we persevere in faith, the Lord rewards us with an exhilarating view we could never have experienced second hand. He reveals his glory and sovereign power to us. In our ensuing words, he communicates his magnificent truths through us. As we lift our gaze to pursue this goal, he supports us with the hydration and cooling breath of his presence. We remember the adventure with him and the outcomes as blessings well worth our temporary struggles.
Let us seek Christ’s heart and wisdom in all circumstances so we never waste our steps in the writing wasteland.
Lord, I praise you for your awesome majesty and tender mercies. I’m so grateful you have invited me along on your adventure of sharing your messages. Please help me remember to maintain my focus on you, and to receive your Holy Spirit’s rejuvenation daily. Amen.
