How Full Is Your Pot?

by Jennifer Uhlarik

“Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the waterpots with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim”

(John 2:7, NKJV).

While traveling years ago, my husband and I disembarked the plane and leisurely walked to our connecting gate where we people watched. As our boarding time neared, a young woman rushed into the waiting area. In her haste, she was struggling to breathe. She reached the desk, gasped out a question, received an answer, and was assisted to an empty chair as airline employees scurried to get her water.

As the scene unfolded, I felt nudged to get up and pray for her. Did I? No. Fear kept me rooted to my chair. I reasoned that others were caring for her. I would be in the way. I reasoned that she appeared embarrassed. Surely, she wouldn’t want anyone calling more attention to her.

I reasoned a lot of things…

Looking back, I regret that I didn’t push past my fear. If nothing else, such a simple act of kindness might have blessed the dear woman. At most, we both might have seen a miraculous healing that day—to God’s glory!

While reading about Jesus turning water to wine at a wedding in Bethany, I was struck by the servers’ obedience. They didn’t question Jesus’ command. They acted. They didn’t fill the pots halfway. They filled them to the brim. Their faith and obedience opened a path for Jesus to provide a miracle. He not only made wine for a wedding where cups had run dry, but it was excellent quality wine—and lots of it. In addition to giving his father glory, Jesus blessed the newlyweds.

As writers, let us consider how we fill our water pots? Have we invited Jesus into our writing process? Do we trust him to guide us to the right agent or publisher? Do we believe his promises even when the rejections come? Do we trust that he doesn’t look at our sales numbers to decide whether we’re successful? Have we paused at book signings or library talks to pray with readers who tell us about difficult circumstances?

God has given us this gift and platform so we can be the vessels he flows through to touch someone. Let’s not miss it!

Lord, in every circumstance, may I fill my water pot to the brim, expecting a bountiful outcome from you!

  1. Thank you, Jennifer, for such a warm reminder of the joy of joining with God in His work. Yup, it is His work, and we are invited along. Who cares about human rejections? God has the plan and as we read in Job, His purposes cannot be thwarted. Thanks for reminding us to walk in trust in Him, not in fear of man’s criticism.

    1. Amen, Kim! The “fear of man” is a real thing–but when you can finally break free of that, it opens the door to fully embrace God’s plan and purpose.
