Driving Through Fear to Arrive at Art

by Tina Yeager

“I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles”

(Isaiah 42:6, NIV).

I mooned over the sconces and chandeliers on the screen. French vessels and candlesticks beckoned my décor-loving heart. I sighed at the possibility of perusing aisles of treasure like the celebrities. I considered attending this famed antique show for weeks, but the same insecurity halted me time and again—the trek.

Though I anticipated creative joy at the destination, I balked at the challenge of getting there. The gauntlet of Atlanta traffic sent shivers down my spine. For the nine months I’d resided in its suburbs, I lingered far outside the perimeter. The hour drive to this event would lead me into the heart of unfamiliar streets. I could face perils for which I was entirely unprepared. I hesitated to register until high noon on the final day.

A nudge from the Lord prompted me to press through despite the risks. Jams delayed the journey. Muscle cars darted around my fenders at top speed with only inches to spare. And I lost my way more than once. But I survived to examine 14th century Bibles, priceless art, and the shimmer of countless crystal lights.

Insecurity often paralyzes me on the journey to follow the writing call. Creative dreams tug at my soul, but self-doubt stays my hand. This path carries serious peril, after all. The demands often prove daunting, far beyond my skill to manage. Delays and setbacks abound. And I lose myself in the tangle of busyness.

But the Holy Spirit prompts me to pursue the journey. He assures me I will never face one moment of this adventure alone. The struggle draws me closer to him and fortifies my weak heart. The Lord rewards my perseverance with priceless blessings. Profound insights into his enduring word. Participation in his artwork. And we enjoy the journey together in the sparkle of his glorious light.

Lord, thank you for holding my hand and guiding me to share your light. Please continue to guide and strengthen me. May your Holy Spirit equip me to draft artful words that illuminate your grace and truth. Amen.
