A Writer’s Dwelling Place
by Tina Yeager
“On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you”
(John 14:20, NIV).
Our new home clings to the edge of a steep hill. Complaints of children who scaled its epic height echo in its shadow. I venture out my front door into summer’s dank breath to fulfill my daily exercise commitment. Challenging choices stretch out before me. Multiple slopes hem us in from every side. Some sidewalk paths present more strenuous challenges than others, but no direction offers perfect ease.
I secure my shoelaces. Step away from the comfort of my house. And ask the Lord to guide our journey together.
The rigor of our hike proves daunting. Twists and missteps present risks. A stab in my knee warns me not to hyperextend it again in careless overconfidence.
On my first weeks here, I often glanced back in regret. Precious writing time ticked away. I soon forgot the aches of wordcraft while on these laborious roads. I missed my notions of a comfortable dwelling place.
Amid the various risks and struggle to endure, the Lord encourages me to glance up. Sunshine honeys the interlaced boughs of varied leaves overhead. Ivory petals shower the sidewalk from a floral arbor arching over the sidewalk. Birds weave through the lacy canopy to serenade our promenade.
The Lord reminds me of his presence. Whether aches seize me in my daily walk or grieve me over this writing call, my sustainer remains at my side. He whispers inspiration and breathes new life into my soul under all conditions.
I no longer look back and yearn for past comfort zones. For the Lord is my dwelling place. As I fight uphill battles in my calling or suffer injury along the way, he sustains and guides me. Christ redeems every challenge to strengthen my legs for future paths. His Spirit blesses me far more than ease or comfort.
As I dwell in him, I remain in joy.
Jesus, thank you for remaining with me on our journey together. I’m so grateful for your sustaining Spirit. Help me to abide in you and seek your inspiration for every step of this writing call. Amen.
