Restored to Write Again

by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

(Psalm 147:3, NIV).

At one time, words left me. Not because I had nothing to say—but because I had too much pain to sort through. The grief of losing my brother and, soon after, my mother created a silence in my spirit that no sentence could fill. As I sat with the weight of loss and the sting of fractured family relationships, my calling as a writer seemed dim. How could I to speak hope when my heart felt so hollow?

But the author of restoration hadn’t stopped writing my story.

God sent people—faithful, praying people—when I could barely whisper his name. My church family became his hands and feet. My life group didn’t just bring me meals; they carried my heart. When some of my closest family ties unraveled, God stitched a new tapestry through my spiritual family.

Then came another unexpected chapter. My daughter’s marriage offered more than joy to the bride. It also brought healing to me. Her husband’s family embraced us with open arms, reminding me that God doesn’t just restore what’s lost. Sometimes he expands what’s possible.

As authors, we often feel pressure to produce words when our souls are still bleeding. But God reveals that we don’t write from perfection—we write from restoration. Our brokenness isn’t a disqualification. It’s the ink of authenticity that God uses to reach hurting readers.

So, pick up your pen—even if your hands still tremble. Write your way through the grief, the confusion, the rebuilding. The same God who binds your wounds will breathe purpose into every page.

Father, thank you for being the restorer of our stories. Thank you for the strength to write again, even when we feel emptied by loss. Surround us with encouragers, with spiritual family, with voices that remind us of your faithfulness. Let our words become instruments of healing for others—testimonies of your grace. Use every painful page in our lives for your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
