Trust the Lord in Writing
by Bonnie Sue Beardsley
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths”
(Proverbs 3:5-6, KJV).
I claimed Proverbs 3:5-6 as a life verse when I entered private school in sixth grade, providing an ongoing foundation for how I lived. As I grew up and trusted God, he led me to write a devotional blog, More Than Just Coffee.
Three years ago, I faced a health scare and stopped blogging. The side effects of my medications twisted my thoughts and hindered my ability to focus. Recently, God urged me to pick up my pen and compose devotions again. In the beginning, I refused the nudges of his gentle voice and offered reasons not to follow through. “I can’t. Writing is too hard because of my mental fog. I’m busy working on a novel.”
My responses were simply excuses. I ran from God like Jonah, trying to put behind me and out of mind what he had asked me to do. Although I knew he had always given me the words, the trust level in my heart remained low.
I sensed no direction for a new project. My thoughts seemed only sufficient for one piece. What could I write next?
God used two authors in my Word Weavers group to give me direction. They sent me texts saying they loved how I characterized the dog in my story and how much my devotions moved them. They suggested that I combine the two concepts and put together twelve selections targeting dog lovers. My faith strengthened as I realized how wonderfully God places people in our lives for guidance.
When I considered the twelve topics, fresh content flooded my mind. God proved his faithfulness once again. Just as he had done in my childhood, he showed me that he reveals his direction when I surrender my will and trust him with my whole heart.
Lord, thank you for proving that we can trust you daily and follow your direction. Help us to stay on your path. Amen.
