Easier, but Not Easy

“When I called, you answered me; you greatly emboldened me”
(Psalm 138:3, NIV).
My son’s German shepherd led us up the steep hill of our daily walk. The dog’s panting harmonized with our labored breathing. Though we had trekked up this sidewalk often during the past six months, the effort still challenged us.
I shifted my steps to the front half of my feet to minimize ankle strain and mustered enough breath to speak. “You’d think this incline wouldn’t be so difficult after half a year.” Near the crest of the most strenuous section, I recalled how I had initially avoided this daunting path. “It is easier, but it still isn’t easy.”
The call to write leads us to a steep path that challenges us to press through rising platform demands. Rejection can knock the wind from our lungs. While breathless and sore, we must shift our steps to adapt to the landscape by developing new craft, technology, and marketing skills. An insecure heart would resist attempting such an intimidating path.
The Lord did not conscript me to scale this sacred mountain alone. The Spirit encouraged me to embark with him on this calling. Over decades of bemoaning the struggle, he has remained faithfully at my side. Almighty God did not flatten the high grade of my hill. Instead, he strengthened me through the challenges.
Even as platform demands persist, so will I. Rejection still stings, but no longer steals my resolve. I now enjoy opportunities to learn new skills alongside fellow creatives.
Although the writing journey isn’t easy, it’s easier. With the Holy Spirit emboldening me, nothing proves impossible. I trust him to redeem these struggles to strengthen, not devastate me. I praise God each day for the opportunity to walk with him, matter how steep the hill.
Father, thank you for calling me on this writing journey with you. I am so grateful for your grace during my complaints. Your sustaining power breathes life into my soul and energizes my calling. I find endless joy and peace in your loving presence. Your faithfulness steadies my every step. May we continue to walk together every day on the path you chose for me. Amen.
