Writing for the Next Generation

by Tina Yeager

“Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the Lord”

(Psalm 102:18, NIV).

Fruit trees inspire me. I dream of cultivating a royal garden lined with my favorite varieties. The arbors in my imagination hem a checkerboard of thriving plant beds. My garden’s beauty would match its blessings and serve endless generations in this idyllic space.

Gardening often appears in scripture as a poetic metaphor to guide us toward fulfilling our purposes. The Lord planted his creatives as bearers of nourishing content. As writers, we may seek his expert cultivation to serve the kingdom for this and future generations.

Dormancy, blight, and other seasons of hardship can cause us to question our role. Struggles may trigger confusion regarding our calling. When we cannot see benefits or impact, we might doubt our identity. Can we call ourselves royal fruit trees while our limbs hang barren?

If the old saying of becoming what we eat held true, I’d identify as an avocado. Though I’d rather not have my appearance match the fruit’s color, it ranks among my favorite super foods. I devour dozens of the green gems monthly. Spiced into guacamole. Scooped onto pizza. Slathered onto my daily salad. I depend on the nutrients to delight my palate, satiate my hunger, and feed my brain.

Despite its many benefits, avocado cultivation incurs tremendous challenges. Excess rain or drought can devastate growth. Freezes prove life threatening. Fierce winds can also overcome them.

Even with a gardener’s constant protection and care, these plants do not produce fruit as quickly as many other varieties. A tree may endure three to fifteen dormant years before a single avocado emerges. The one who originally invests in these super food producers might never serve his own needs. His work might instead benefit those who inherit the orchard.

My writing journey has suffered years of dormancy, chilling hardships, and winds that threatened to uproot my calling. I’m thankful the Lord has watered my soul with his Spirit and sheltered me from destruction.

I no longer question my gardener but trust his purpose instead. Whether I see the fruit from my work or bestow its benefit upon a future generation, I remain grateful for my position in the kingdom. I believe the Creator will bring forth super foods in his perfect timing. May beauty and blessings serve the generations in my King’s idyllic space.

Father, thank you for creating me to bear fruit according to your perfect timing. Please continue to cultivate me in alignment with your will. May your Holy Spirit generate nourishing content through me to benefit your kingdom. Amen.
