Double Portion Blessings: God’s Restoration for Authors

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes

“Instead of your shame, you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace, you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours”

(Isaiah 61:7, NIV).

As Christian authors, many of us grapple with feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt in our writing journeys. At times, I have questioned whether I truly had the talent or calling to fulfill the purpose God laid on my heart. Yet during those moments, God consistently reminds me that his grace is not defined by our limitations; his plans for us exceed our fears and insecurities.

I vividly recall a particularly discouraging season filled with rejection letters and the weight of imposter syndrome. I even considered stepping back from writing to return to a more traditional career. However, through his unwavering faithfulness, God reignited a spark within me. Unexpected doors opened—speaking opportunities, article publication, and feedback indicating my writing resonated with readers. Not due to my efforts, this transformation came as a manifestation of his abundant grace.

These experiences taught me that this journey is not solely about my abilities; it’s about embracing God’s call for renewal, restoration, and rebirth. Through it, I received a double portion of blessings, just as Isaiah 61:7 promises.

When writing feels directionless, God infuses our work with new meaning. He aims his plans at our good and equips us to fulfill our calling. He renewed my purpose by showing me that my words have the power to glorify him and uplift others.

When we feel disqualified by past failures or mistakes, the Lord restores our confidence by reminding us that we are his chosen vessels. Rather than calling the qualified, he qualifies the called, allowing us to step boldly into our roles as writers.

When shame and discouragement overshadow our creativity, God replaces them with profound and everlasting joy. His blessings serve as reminders of his faithfulness, filling our hearts with gratitude and hope for the purpose he has for us.

Let’s embrace this season of renewal together, trusting in the truth that His plans for us are more incredible than anything we could conceive.

Father, thank you for being a God of restoration and renewal. Even in moments of doubt, you pour out your blessings, granting us a double portion of joy. Help us to trust in your promises and to seek your guidance in our writing endeavors. Renew our hearts, restore our confidence, and rebirth our joy so we may pursue the purpose you have set before us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
