Soul Sharpeners by Kathryn Howard

Soul Sharpeners

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another”

(Proverbs 27:17, NIV).

I’m in love with a book called The Hope Quotient, by Ray Johnston. I’ve listened to the audiobook many times and feel like I know the man. This book showed up, perfectly timed, during a dark season of fear and discouragement. But our sweet Lord shined hope into my soul through this author’s message.

In this book, Ray breaks down five relationships we all need. One he calls “Soul Sharpeners.” When I read this, I immediately thought of my Word Weavers community.

He says, “The best way to grow as a writer is by being the worst writer in the room.”  It may sound self-deprecating at first, but what better place to learn than among pros?

I joined Word Weavers because deadlines make me write. Each month, I bring something to share with the group. Life is busy and excuses abound, but I want to grow as a writer. That won’t happen if I don’t do the work.

Nothing compares to hearing another member cold-read my draft and then share their critique. Lips locked, I cringe as they expose my poorly placed words. I overthink during the five minutes they scribble away. But joy explodes in my heart when I receive affirmation.

These fellow writers scrutinize my thoughts while also sharpening my writing skills. The exhilarating and fascinating process makes the struggle to learn worthwhile.

One fellow group member referred to our critiques as “blind spot mirrors.” One finds missing commas, another spots passive voice or a need for more tension, while the pro slashes unnecessary words. But love abounds in all that chopping, and everyone’s input improves the piece.

Numerous members are published. Witnessing their successes makes my dreams feel achievable too.

After our meetings, we grab lunch and deepen friendships. We text throughout the month, pray for one another, and share scriptures and encouragement.

At Word Weavers, I’ve found inspiration, sisterhood, and accountability. How beautiful it is to grow alongside soul sharpeners who share God’s calling to spread his message through our words.

Thank you, Lord, for the creative community of Word Weavers. Continue to show us how to sharpen each other, as iron sharpens iron. Help us prioritize our callings to write, and inspire others in their journeys. You get all the glory, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
