Groanings
by Jasmine Gatti
(Romans 8:22, ESV).
The vibrations quiver to the spires of Staffordshire’s gothic cathedral as the four-part children’s choir from Baltimore resounds the hymn, “Amazing Grace.” Precise, yet fun, Ms. Fallon directs the children’s voices for the United Kingdom summer competition.
I watch from the oak pew with its finely embroidered prayer pillows, savoring the heavenly tunes that float to the marble buttresses. The pews complement the pulpit-etched story of Martin Luther and the stained-glass motifs depicting the crucifixion.
I gaze up as the sun’s translucent rays ignite red hues in windows illuminating the blood around the Savior’s crown of thorns and pierced limbs.
As Jesus carried the cross, his back must have ached along the narrow Via Dolorosa. He suffered as the Lamb of God who died in sacrificial love for our trespasses. Yet on a rainy day, I’m distracted by my backache after writing for hours at my computer. I apply a soothing salve, but it soon throbs again—so minute compared to his stripes.
Jesus’ heart and soul must have ached when his apostle family betrayed him. Bodily death and separation from his father loomed.
I inwardly groan when my family annoys me with irritating habits. They seem ungrateful when I shoulder the responsibility of caring for them. So minuscule compared to what Jesus bore while aware of humanity’s daily ungratefulness.
Jesus groaned while he was on earth. We continue to groan with the support of the Holy Spirit. We sense in our deepest recesses something better, wiser, perfect, and just. We await the perfect body to mate
Lord, we groan to you in utterances and song. May you lead us to record these by writing for others and ourselves. And may the Holy Spirit intercede for us with wordless groans. Please offer us your power to keep us steadfast as you perfect what is prepared for us. Amen.
