Completing Our Calling as Writers
by Tina Yeager
(Philippians 1:4-6, NIV).
Leaves of a fallen limb waved from the edge of our lawn after a storm and beckoned me closer. As I drew near, I passed the driveway my husband had left near daybreak and would return to at dusk.
The urge to ease his burden niggled at my soul. I tugged at the twelve-foot branch, but it refused to budge. The sap-rich wood weighed more than my desk.
I can’t do this. It’s too much for me.
After my spouse soldiered through a home improvement chore in the coming days, the pulpy project still glared at me. I strode to the driveway’s edge and reassessed the challenge. Too thick for twig clippers. No way could I wield the chainsaw.
I wish I could do this. But it’s too much for me.
I reported my good intentions to my husband the following afternoon. My words of self-justification failed to relieve my sense of responsibility to pitch in. He shifted his sore arms and cited specific tools and steps he would take. He’d handle the work later.
On my way to the mailbox today, summer rays highlighted the downed limb. I thought about my spouse working past midnight and his anticipated approach to this task.
With the right tools and steps, maybe I can offer a blessing here.
I got the hand saw and severed the branch into sections. Within an hour, I had put the logs into their proper place.
I settle back at my desk to face a more vital and eternal task reaching broken souls who lie waiting for Jesus’ words. The need for truth, rescue, and hope seems too heavy for my meager skills and platform.
Other authors commit hours to this calling. I admire their accomplishments and yearn to support them in our shared cause. Yet self-doubt often stops me at the edge of an effort.
Jesus reminds me I can do this. He will guide me through the steps and equip me to accomplish my call. Nothing is too much for God and me together.
Lord, thank you for tugging at my soul when I might otherwise give up on this writing call. Please guide me to serve your purpose and share your message with those in need. Let me share in the work of blessing the broken. Thank you for your faithfulness as you carry the good work you began on to completion. Amen.
