Writers of Freedom

by Tina Yeager

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners”

(Isaiah 61:1, NIV).

Independence Day shimmers on this week’s horizon. A flag waves from its stand outside our house declaring our support. We’ll wear patriotic colors, witness fireworks, and inhale the smoky aromas of countless neighborhood barbeques. Along with our church community, we’ll offer nods to those who sacrificed much to maintain our liberty. Beyond a moment of fleeting acknowledgment, few thoughts may dwell on our nation’s history.

Colonists suffered from the nationality defining them. Tyranny oppressed the citizens of this land, draining their talents, resources, and well-being. A bold few took up their talents and wrote the catalyst triggering freedom for multitudes.

As I consider honoring my national liberty, another neglected account of deliverance comes to mind. One far more needed in a culture suffering from more pervasive oppression. Christ’s sacrifice to win the war against death and free the world from the tyranny of sin receives little honor in our land today.

I wonder how well I’ve taken up my talents to catalyze others’ freedom. I wear the symbols of citizenship in God’s Kingdom. I witness sermons and share delicious fellowship in prayer. I support those who publish redemption messages. Yet the mission to proclaim freedom to oppressed souls is not yet accomplished. Perhaps I have more to do in response to God’s call to write.

The Lord unrolls parchment onto our desks as Christian writers. He anoints us with spiritual ink and inspires us to draft his declarations of truth and rescue. May we respond to the tyranny of darkness with courage and faithfulness. In our celebrations of heavenly citizenship, let us not forget to honor our commission as writers of freedom.

Lord Jesus, thank you for the blood-ink by which you contracted my freedom. Please stir my mind and heart to draft words inspiring others to experience new citizenship in your Kingdom. Anoint my work to honor and glorify your purpose. May my life proclaim a legacy of victory in you. Amen.
