The Lonely Writer by Linda Carter

The Lonely Writer

by Linda Carter

“My soul is quiet and waits for God alone. He is the One who saves me. He alone is my rock and the One who saves me. He is my strong place. I will not be shaken”

(Psalms 62:1-2, NLV).

Sometimes our writing road feels pretty lonely and seems to go on forever without much success. A desert highway connecting California to Nevada earned its name as the ‘loneliest road’ because it stretches for miles and miles without a stop or signs of human life. I’ve driven this and others like it. After a while, the emptiness generates a desperation to see evidence that other people have passed the same way. The silent threat that one can get stuck in a desert with no help in sight becomes real.

As authors, we may encounter spiritual and emotional loneliness. During that season when we feel we have no one to turn to, we can seek solace in Psalm 62. This small passage packs power. If we meditate on the words, we begin to experience the awareness deep within that we really aren’t alone. Papa God is there. He is our rock. He is the One that will save us. He is our strong place to run to. He unfailingly guides and protects us through the journey of life.

At other times merely crying out to God disperses our anxiety and fears, and washes relief over our parched spirits. Releasing our tears and absorbing his promises ushers us into a better place. There is always an exchange when we seek God. We give him our hurts and frustrations and he bestows a fresh flow of his love and divine inspiration, leading to new hope and confidence to move forward from a better frame of mind.

Papa God, thank you for always being there and offering me such a great exchange. I submit my writing and the accompanying loneliness to you, as my offering, coming to receive your gifts and promises.

  1. This Psalm was my living water when I walked with mom through her dementia journey. It was in this place I learned more of the love of God.
