Hidden Treasure by Brenda Fink

Hidden Treasure

by Brenda Fink

“Then He said to them, ‘Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old’”

(Matthew 13:52, NKJV).

Can you picture Jesus sitting by the seashore? I imagine him trying to slip away for some quiet time to think, pray, or seek a respite from the crowds. Yet, like many other days, the people pour in around him, pushing close to hear his words.

He tells parable after parable. The crowds hang on every word of truth he utters. Tired after a long day, he closes his sermon and returns indoors. Alone with his disciples, he asks if they understood all the parables he shared. Quickly they respond, “Yes.”

Knowing they don’t fully comprehend, Jesus explains that ‘scribes’ who serve as Jesus’ disciples have treasures available to them in old and new scriptures.

Over the years, the duties of scribes transitioned from court officiation into service as copyists, editors, and teachers. These learned members of society studied and interpreted Scripture. Today they would be considered writers or teachers.

Rather than instructing his followers to change their professions and become scribes, Jesus revealed divine truth in this illustration about studying the Mosaic Law, the Prophets, and his sermons. He used the parables to point out spiritual applications from daily activities.

Paul expressed a similar thought when he told Timothy to study so he could correctly teach the gospel to his congregants in 2 Timothy 2:15. Every writer who is a student of God’s word has a treasury of resources available to them.

The Greek word Jesus used for treasure carries the same meaning as the words ‘thesaurus’ or ‘storehouse.’ Jesus, who reigns sovereign over language, lives within our hearts. As modern-day scribes, we can access the wealth of his wisdom and build the treasury within us as we study the Bible and allow the Holy Spirit to speak the truth to our hearts

As we write the words God provides, he will pull old and new things out of us. Through the power of the written word, we can share fresh rhema from heaven and cast new light on the familiar.  As we position ourselves before Jesus, he will open us up and bring out what he placed there for such a time as this.  We become the pen in Christ’s hand.

Father, thank you for your Word. Help me grow in my understanding of the Scriptures.

I pray you impart your wisdom to me and the grace to share it with others. In Jesus name, amen.
