Writing for a Post-Winter Bloom
by Tina Yeager
(Isaiah 35:2-3, NLT).
Winter bruised, stripped, and left my rosebushes for dead. Our garden’s most beautiful feature exchanged its glory for a crown of thorns. Remnant twigs continued to line my front walkway as a haunting reminder of suffering.
Despite a dormant season, the floral pageant did not conclude in death. Last month, destitute branches sprouted a coat of leaves. Ruddy spearpoints later peeked forth among the greenery. The buds hid themselves in tight shrouds for several days. Finally, crimson glory burst forth to end our wait.
Humble buds nestled among flamboyant blossoms. Unique in size and shape, each faced a short season during which they could share their gifts with the household. I clipped a variety of blooms for a layered centerpiece.
Rose bushes sacrifice much to present their divine testimony. Through suffering and time, they communicate our redemption story through the language of nature. Each thorn, leaf, and petal contributes a vital gift to bring forth a life-saving message.
As writers, we also endure countless hours of hardship, pain, and sacrifice. Rejection, expenses, and time demands may strip our identity as wordsmiths. Discouragement lashes our hearts without mercy. We languish through dormant seasons, waiting for glory to break through while the world deems our careers dead.
Should our words unfurl before an audience, neighboring authors might seem to blossom with a sweeter fragrance and broader impact. Comparison can crush the tender petals of our writer-hearts.
Obedience to our calling leads us through the grounds of a chilling enemy. Yet we have not been commissioned to sacrifice for the accuser’s benefit. The world has no right to assess the significance of our message, in dormant or blooming seasons.
Neighboring authors might bloom on media platforms in this life’s brief and passing spring. But eternal significance rests in the gardener’s hand. The Lord selects and arranges us into layered blessing bouquets whose impact we cannot fathom.
If we remain faithful to the one who trades our losses for an eternal crown, hope will reign.
The Creator can resurrect life from the darkest writing seasons. He transforms hopelessness into resilience. If we submit our sacrifices, troubles, and end results to serving his household, our splendor will transcend earthly imagination. And his fragrance may bless the world through our words.
Jesus, thank you for delivering me from darkness to eternal hope. Help me bloom in the shape and time of your perfect design. Arrange my writing to share your fragrant messages of life with the world. Amen.

Thank you, Janet! I’m so blessed to know the devotion encouraged you today! May the Lord lift your heart and anoint your words throughout the days to come.
Jon Drury in You Rang? agrees with you. He writes, “When I studied my despair, I turned to the Scriptures. I found I had trusted in outcomes, people, and things. Scripture taught me that my trust was to be in God alone.” Thanks for the reminder!!
A potent message delivered in a beautiful way. You blessed me. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Maggie!
