Write Away

by Morgan Mitchell

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves”

(James 1:22, NKJV).

When I embarked upon my writer’s journey, I read books and articles about the craft. I began with one. Then a friend recommended a writing website, my mom bought me a few more books, and before I knew it, I did nothing but read about writing.

During that time, I got very little writing done. Even worse, the advice I read made me afraid to write, because I knew I could never obey all the rules. I believed I needed to refrain from writing until I had it all figured out.

Reading about the craft proved far easier than putting words to paper. But God did not give us a pen so we could read about how to use it. He called us to use the gift he provided.

There is nothing wrong with studying to become a better writer. After all, we always have room to grow. But we can’t let it distract us from fulfilling our calling.

We can easily duck behind the excuse, “But I don’t know enough about writing. I need to learn more. Then I’ll really be able to write something that will glorify God.”

The problem is, we will never stop learning. If we wait until we’ve accumulated all the knowledge we need, we will never write anything. And if we never write, then God cannot use us for his purpose. God did not call us to read about writing. He called us to write.

Guess what? God does not need us to have it all figured out. He requires only that we obey him and pick up our pens.

Lord, help me to stop reading about writing and to actually write. Let me be able to write in a way that will further your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.
