Fuzzy Blankets

by Donna Mumma

“But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it”

(Deuteronomy 30:14, NKJV).

I’ve developed a new obsession with fuzzy blankets. Not the full-sized covers made for a bed, but the smaller throws to snuggle while watching TV, reading, or lounging on the couch. I wrap myself inside a blanket to restore my inner peace after a stressful day.

The turbulence during the time of Deuteronomy’s writing might parallel our modern struggles. The world darkens around us and grows more unsettling daily. You can count the positive headlines on a single hand most days, while the negative stories pile up by the hour. The world strains our hearts with its onslaught of angst and negativity.

As Christian writers, we have the power of restorative messages. Our words can serve as fuzzy blankets that wrap around our readers. The pages we write may comfort them amid the culture’s attempts to eclipse hope and truth.

God’s word creates the fabric of those fuzzy blankets. The threads of his promises weave together with his enduring love and forgiveness. The Lord designs blessings in unique patterns and shades for each of us. His truth warms and protects us when trials chill us deep in our bones. Like my houseful of blankets, we have his word with us, always near and at the ready when peace and calm are needed.

Jesus calls us to stitch our words with his and share the warmth with suffering souls. The commission and need stand clear before us. So as we write this year, let’s pull his message off the back of the couch, get the words down, and wrap our readers up in his good news.

Dear Father, guide our work to blanket the world with your message. Help us wrap those who are hurting in the warmth of your love and forgiveness. Amen.

I loved this. Donna I truly appreciated how you kept the imagery of a blanket throughout this post. I truly felt “warmed” by it. 🥰

I loved this analogy of the fuzzy blanket Donna. It’s the same way I feel about being in nature. God’s secret restorative place in the world.
