A Writer’s Splendored Hope
by Tina Yeager
(1 Thessalonians 2:19, NIV).
Winter blusters in menacing tones outside. Gales whip frosty debris at my windows. The chill permeates through the panes and needles my bones. I shiver amid paper drifts. Unpaid bills, notes for stalled projects, and countless to-do lists spill from both sides of my desk into rising piles on my floor. Like yeti rising from this paper blizzard, writing costs and demands grow each year. I struggle against circumstances that threaten to freeze my motivation. As trials drive ice into the cracks of my mindset, I cry out to the maker of wind and warmth.
I plead with my soul’s author for a reason to pursue this calling. The landscape of publishing grows more challenging each month. Chances of success—or even mitigating losses—continue to stretch further from reach. I spin my writer’s wheels, busier than ever before, yet I feel stuck in this snowdrift bereft of honor or reward to warm my aching fingers.
I lay my frozen hopes at Jesus’ feet.
He breathes over our sacred space together. Holy fire dispels the darkness and its chilling lies. No scarcity exists in Christ’s presence, neither of reward nor purpose.
In this light, I see my joy with refocused vision. Fulfillment of a call to bear Jesus’ words cannot be measured on paper. Splendor crowns the writer when her obedience blesses others. The Holy Spirit’s creative fire kindles fresh hope in my heart. Instead of relying on my senses to confirm my purpose, I must pursue this calling from a heart of faith.
I might never see gilded effects on readers. With fingers aching in their cold prison cells, apostles wrote to a few faltering believers. Nothing guaranteed the letters would reach their intended audience. The authors might never confirm whether readers accepted the message. Likewise, I can write in faith for the sake of Jesus and the unseen readers to whom he has called me. No lesser hope, joy, or crown will outlast this world’s persistent blustering.
Creator, thank you for melting the frigid barriers holding me back from pursuing my divine purpose. I’m so grateful for this call to serve you with words. Please guide the work of my hands and kindle the motivation to persevere in my creative journey. Help me to honor you and fulfill your will in every moment, with every word, for each heart you want me to reach in your name. Amen.
