My Raggedy Writing Gift

by Tina Yeager

“While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them”

(Luke 2:6-7, NIV).

I wove thousands of words into various works over my years as a writer. Some stories and studies lay unread in scrappy piles. A few books and articles went through presses before resting on the shelf of used work. After all these years of spinning prose, I wonder at the worth of the lines I produced. Could Jesus still find purpose in my gift when I see only rags to offer?

Luke’s ancient words spin a thread of hope to bless my writer’s heart.

Cast-off scraps played a vital role in the original Christmas story. The weaver’s dreams for higher purpose frayed at the raggedy edges of that fabric. The final owner might have salvaged the rags to swaddle a sacrificial lamb. However used or disused, those hopeless fragments landed on a scrap pile in a stable. Their significance remained beyond the understanding of all who touched them.

The author of life used those scraps to foreshadow the climax of Christ’s ministry. One woman’s hands wrapped Immanuel in cloths and laid him in a feeding trough. Other women’s hands wrapped the bread of life in cloths and laid him in the tomb as he prepared to rise.

Rags hold no worth of their own. But these scraps took on priceless significance when they swaddled and illustrated the gospel message.

This Christmas I lay my raggedy gifts before the Son of God. I trust him to wrap up a greater purpose for my weaving work than I can conceive. Even if I never see where the scraps land or why, may my words honor his message well.

Immanuel and Savior, thank you for redeeming me. I’m so grateful for this call to serve you with words. Please guide the work of my hands to wrap your blessings in excellence. Help me offer my gifts to honor you. Amen.
