Is My Writing a Waste of Time?

by Rose Noland

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing”
(John 15:5, NIV).

I identify as a doer. I hate wasting time, money, or effort. This type-A mindset affects my writing journey. I work hard to produce quality content that engages and resonates with my readers. Despite my best efforts, book sales falter and email subscribers unsubscribe. I often wonder how long I will have to fight disappointments.

Doubts plague my mind.

“I’m doing this for you, God! Why isn’t it working? Am I just wasting my time and effort? Did I misunderstand your will?”

When discouragement attacks, truth alone can rescue me. The Holy Spirit helps me remember that he called me to write. I cling to scripture’s promise that if we abide in Jesus and his Word, we will bear lasting fruit that will glorify God (John 15:7-11, NIV). I also remind myself that success in the world’s eyes does not equal success in God’s eyes.

Jesus knew we would experience disappointments. That’s why he reminded his followers of his love and promised them joy if they remained in him, even when facing discouragement.

I will probably have to fight doubts and disappointments until the day I die. Each battle’s outcome hinges upon who I choose to believe. I can listen to the voice of Satan, the deceiver. I might opt to follow my own fallible logic. Or I can believe Jesus, the lover of my soul. If my heart’s trust dwells in Christ, not a moment or word will go to waste.

Jesus, you chose and appointed me as a Christian writer to go and bear much fruit—fruit that will last. And although I cannot see all the results of my labor now, I know that you cannot lie. By faith, I will keep on writing and spreading the redemptive message of your love—with joy. Amen.

  1. Thank you, Rose, for encouraging us. I really needed to hear this advice. I have felt discouraged lately with my writing path. But after reading this, I know this discouragement may be coming from Satan or maybe just my own fallible logic. I need to listen to God’s voice and follow His lead.

  2. Thank you for this word! I get so distracted and discouraged and wonder myself if I should keep writing.

    1. You’re more than welcome, Nicole. Distraction and discouragement come knocking at my door way too often. Ask your Savior to help you during these times. Focus on Jesus and the eternally-lasting good fruit for His glory your writing will produce.

  3. I think we all find ourselves in this spot at times. But whether it’s our writing or something else, you’re exactly right: When discouragement attacks, truth alone can rescue me. Thank you for that reminder!
