Enjoy the Journey

by LaToya S. Jones

“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. I returned, and saw under the sun, that the  race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them  all”

(Ecclesiastes 9:10-11, KJV).

Recently, I attended a book signing, where I popped the “big question” to the author. “How do you overcome writer’s block?”

I anticipated the answer of all time.

Instead, the author responded, “There’s no such thing as writer’s block.”

The author briefly elaborated, but my experience left me doubting that statement.

Later that day, another writer and I discussed this same question.

He offered this advice, “Whenever you’re stuck, try writing one sentence a day.”

His encouragement reminded me of the Lord’s instructions given years ago. I started my writing journey in 2015 with joy but lost my zeal. I allowed things to come between me and the journey.

Writer’s block brought pressure and stole the pleasure from my gift. In 2020, the day came when I stamped my book done, but I felt drained and unhappy with the work. Soon after, I heard the Lord say, “Throw it out and start over.” He began to reveal his intent for me to enjoy the journey he’d set before me.

We set deadlines, timeframes, high expectations – many things to push us through the work. But do we truly enjoy the journey? It’s time to take our time. We have been chosen with a blessing from the Lord. Gather and feel through this journey. Let us learn from mistakes, overcome the distractions like writer’s block, and improve while we pace.

Scripture says, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might.” I pray we all find ways to apply this to our writing. Remember our calling comes from one who desires to bless us with joy on the journey.

Jesus, cover us all in strength and endurance, help us to overcome the obstacles, roadblocks, and discouragements that may hinder our way and steal away our enjoyment. Amen.

  1. One page a day is doable, and I need to apply this asap. My writing has withered to almost nothing except for a few paragraphs to try to identify what’s going on. My life has been “on hold” for the past 9 nine months as my divorce is slowly progressing. I need to outlet to write, and your message inspired me to get back in the groove of writing by daily writing little snippets that may cause me to find the joy again to complete some competent work.

    1. Amen! It’s the same way as putting on a coat, one arm at a time. For me, there were distractions, life, and anything else that could draw me away. Get back on the course! It’s a race, but never forget some people are better as sprinters, and others, as cross country runners.
