An Entire World of Stories

by Michele Olson

“Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written”

(John 21:25, NIV).

When I read this verse about all the things Jesus did, and how if they were written down, the entire world couldn’t hold all the stories, my writing mind explodes!

Within this verse, I also find a promise to all writers. Imagine if we wrote all the ways God has shown up, encouraged, saved, prompted, and lavished love upon us in the everyday “things” of our lives. And then, we are given those seeds to draw upon for our own stories. Think of it. You can include in your writing all the funny, poignant, embarrassing, and loving moments that are unique to you.

Open your horizons with questions. What do you love to do in your free time? What are some memorable things said by your kids or grandkids? What movie or TV show moved you and gave you a great idea for a new story, all from your viewpoint? What did you observe about people at the airport while waiting for a flight? We have the author of all creativity and the greatest story ever told as our inspiration and guide to unending ideas.

Imagine the other things “Jesus did.” We know they were for the good of humanity, in service to his father, and sometimes baffling to the people. Envision the titles of the books that if they were written down could not be contained.

We have been given a gift to put words on paper and invite readers to journey with a cast of characters. We can invite readers to a new concept or a new place, a closer walk with God, and to grow into the likeness of Jesus.

Today, don’t think about marketing, sales, competition, deadlines, or being stuck. Soak up the pure joy of words that end up in books that emulate what God has given you. The possibilities are as endless as eternity and bigger than anything the entire world could ever hold–all because of Jesus.

Lord, encourage me this day to tell my stories in the light of how you freely and lovingly told stories that changed the world. Thank you that I can turn to you for my creative inspiration. Amen.
