Developing Capacity
by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes
“Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”
Why aren’t some of us receiving many of the blessings God promised us? What must we do to receive all we desire from God? Like me, have you ever asked these questions, especially as it relates to your writing? If so, you’re in good company. And the Bible has a lot of wisdom as it relates to developing our capacity as authors.
Jesus instructed Simon Peter to launch out his boat into the deep, with nets for a catch. Simon’s response indicates he didn’t give the instructions much thought. Then he half-heartedly obeyed. Afterward, Simon experienced the nets ripping when he should’ve arranged for a larger boat. But he called for a boat that wasn’t big enough for the blessing. Here lies a vital lesson we can apply to expectation when it comes to our writing; heaven will never run out of resources. However, the capacity on earth always determines how much heaven releases. Our faith dictates our blessing (Matt. 9:29).
For every capacity we present, there is always a corresponding flow. We can only expect to receive a flow commensurate with the available volume of room we prepare. As writers, there are three strategies we can begin doing now to develop our capacity. They are the following:
- Application- Make a practice of reading and studying the Bible.
- Spiritual- Pray daily to ask God for direction and discernment with all aspects of writing. Daily spend time worshiping God.
- Practical- Practice the craft of writing. Hone your craft through critique groups, professional associations, and classes.
Lord, help me to see myself as you see me so I can prepare my life for an outpouring of blessings as an author. Help me to see the amazing capacity within myself. I can mount up on wings like eagles and fly to heights beyond my wildest imaginations. Lord, thank you for the gift of creativity. Thank you for vision, purpose, and blessings beyond all I could ever ask or imagine!
