He Reigns in the Storms
by Tina Yeager
(Luke 8:23-25).
Rain pelts my windows while stormy gloom floods my office. I tap at the keyboard in an attempt to summon an inspiring line onto the blank screen during this ominous hour. Shadows stretch from the corners, pawing at my distracted mind. The squall rages along with my worries.
I’m at risk of drowning in this overwhelm.
Years of work, with the effort and resources of many hands, rowed me here to the center of this publication sea. I’m fighting the winds of my failure-fears, inexperience, and an endless list of challenging tasks to save this vessel from sinking. What if I fail my publisher, agent, family? Worse yet, what if the whole thing capsizes and I fail Jesus?
If I allow this deluge of fear to swamp my progress, we might all sink together. That is, if this voyage remains up to me.
A sweet, familiar whisper overrides the thrashing rains. This venture has never been mine to accomplish. I can choose to captain my ship and sink it. Or I can surrender in faith to the Lord here with me.
Why should I fret over my vessel’s success when he commands the wind and sea? Christ sent me on this voyage and has business for us together on the other side of this storm. If I learn to trust him here, he has unimaginable deliverance and miracles waiting on the shores where lost souls need to hear his message.
I began typing on this stormy afternoon filled with doubts whether sufficient work might survive. But the Lord has answered my plea for rescue and words now brighten my screen. The rain has subsided, both outside the window and within my soul.
Savior, I praise you for your reign in all my storms. Help me remember this is your mission, and its success depends upon you. Keep me mindful of your power and presence each day. Thank you for going before me and remaining with me on this voyage in grace. Amen.
